How to De-Ess Vocals in FL Studio (Stock Plugins and a Free Option)

Three stock ways to de-ess a vocal in FL Studio (Maximus, Fruity Multiband Compressor, a sidechained Fruity Limiter), how to load a free VST3 de-esser, and which mixer slot it goes in.

FL Studio has no plugin called a de-esser, but it ships three ways to build one. Maximus has a factory preset named De-esser Split Band (Producer Edition and up). Fruity Multiband Compressor can compress only its high band. Fruity Limiter can duck the vocal from a filtered sidechain copy. If you would rather use a dedicated plugin, any free VST3 de-esser loads after one plugin scan. The steps below follow the FL Studio 2026 online manual.

Disclosure: we build audio plugins at Ghostnote, and one is a free de-esser. It is one of three free options in Method 3, with one labeled section at the end. No affiliate links.

Does FL Studio have a de-esser?

Not as a standalone plugin. The manual's list of stock effects has no entry with that name. Its dynamics section includes Fruity Compressor, Fruity Limiter, Fruity Multiband Compressor, Maximus, Emphasis, Fruity Soft Clipper, Low Lifter and Transient Processor. The one new plugin in FL Studio 2026 is Transmitter, which splits a sound into transient and sustain. It is not a de-esser either.

The de-essing lives inside Maximus. Its manual page lists de-esser among the jobs it does, and says Maximus comes with Producer Edition and up. Image-Line's edition comparison lists Fruity Multiband Compressor, Fruity Limiter and Fruity Parametric EQ2 as included in all editions, so Fruity Edition owners still have Methods 2 and 3. Fruity Edition cannot record audio (8 Playlist audio clips), so import the vocal.

Image-Line made the same point in its own de-essing tutorial: most de-essers are band-limited compressors, so a multiband compressor can do the job. It suggests the mid band for a narrow peak and the high band for everything above a frequency.

Before you start: find your sibilance in the mixer

Every method below needs one number: the frequency where your esses start. Fruity Parametric EQ 2 has a band-solo feature built for finding it.

  1. Put the vocal on its own insert and loop the two harshest bars.
  2. Load Fruity Parametric EQ 2 in an empty slot. Make sure the headphones icon (Band solo on shift) is on.
  3. Drag one peaking band's token up for a boost, then drag it slowly across the top of the spectrum. Scroll the mouse wheel over the token to narrow it.
  4. Where the esses jump out, hold Shift and click the token. FL solos just that band, so you hear the sibilance on its own.
  5. Note the frequency, then delete the boost. This EQ was a probe, not part of the chain.

Typical ranges for deep, mid and bright voices are in our de-esser settings for rap, along with how much reduction to aim for. This page covers the clicks inside FL Studio.

Method 1: Maximus as a de-esser

This is the manual's own method, from the de-essing tutorial in the Maximus section. Control names come from the Maximus controls page.

  1. Load Maximus on the vocal's insert, in the slot after your subtractive EQ.
  2. Open the preset De-esser Split Band. In it, LOW is set to COMP OFF (passes unprocessed), HIGH and MASTER are OFF, so the MID band is the only compressor at work and reaches up to 20 kHz.
  3. Set the band edge. Turn the LOW frequency knob, which sets the boundary between the LOW and MID bands, to the frequency you found. You can also drag that boundary in the BANDS view. Show output spectrogram, in the same display, shows where the esses sit.
  4. Solo the band to check it. With the MID tab selected, press SOLO. If you can follow the lyric, raise the LOW frequency.
  5. Drive it with PRE, then lower POST to match. The preset's curve holds the MID band around −6 dB. Raise PRE until the esses reach it, then lower POST by the same amount so the rest of the vocal keeps its level.
  6. Set ATT and REL. The tutorial says T sounds are short transients while an S can last a second or so. Set ATT fast enough to catch the Ts and REL long enough to hold down a long S.
  7. Watch it work. Switch to MONITOR and turn on Show band gain envelope to see the reduction on each ess.
  8. A/B it. Store your settings in the spare state (the down-arrow button, bottom right), then use Flip with spare state to compare.

Method 2: Fruity Multiband Compressor or a sidechained Fruity Limiter

2A. Fruity Multiband Compressor, high band only

The Fruity Multiband Compressor splits the signal into three bands, each with its own compressor.

  1. Load it on the vocal insert after your subtractive EQ.
  2. Set the LOW and MID band switches (A/M/B) to Bypass, so those bands pass unchanged. Leave HIGH on Active.
  3. Turn the fourth cutoff knob, Highpass lower cutoff, to the frequency you found. Keep the other cutoffs meeting it (see mistakes below).
  4. On the HIGH band, lower Threshold (0 to −60 dB) until only the esses cross it.
  5. Set a high Ratio, a fast Attack (the range starts at 0.1 ms) and a short Release (from 10 ms).
  6. Watch the C (gain reduction) meter: it should move on esses only.

2B. Fruity Limiter with a filtered sidechain

Fruity Limiter has a compressor with a sidechain input. Feed it a copy of the vocal filtered down to the esses, and it turns the whole vocal down only when an ess fires. Routing follows the mixer manual's sidechain section. You need three inserts.

  1. Vox carries the vocal and its subtractive EQ. Select it and left-click the send switches on two other inserts, Vox DS and Key, to send it to both. Turn off its send to the Master.
  2. On Key, load Fruity Parametric EQ 2 and set a steep High Pass band just under your sibilance frequency. Only esses should be left.
  3. Select Key, right-click the send switch on Vox DS, and choose Sidechain to this track only. Key now feeds Vox DS without being heard, and its Master send is off. If you pick plain Sidechain to this track instead, deselect Key's send to the Master yourself.
  4. On Vox DS, load Fruity Limiter, open the COMP tab, right-click the SIDECHAIN selector and pick Key.
  5. Lower THRESH below the sidechain's ess peaks and raise RATIO. Keep ATT and REL short.
  6. Keep SUSTAIN short too. The compressor reads average (RMS) level, and SUSTAIN sets how long it averages over, up to 1,000 ms.
  7. On the LIMIT tab, turn CEIL to maximum and ATT to 0. That leaves the compressor working alone, with no limiter look-ahead delay.

This turns down the whole vocal, not just the top end, so keep reduction to a few dB.

Method 3: a free third-party de-esser in FL Studio

A dedicated de-esser puts crossover, threshold and a listen mode on one screen. The manual's plugin install page gives the steps:

  1. Run the plugin's installer and keep its default location. The File settings page says VST3 and AU plugins must sit in the default system folders. You cannot add a custom path for them. The folders themselves are listed in where VST3 plugins go.
  2. In FL Studio, open Options, Manage plugins (File settings links to it too).
  3. Tick Verify plugins, then start the scan (the manual calls it Find more plugins). Verifying sorts each plugin into effects or instruments, which a fast scan does not do.
  4. Find the new plugin in the Browser under Plugin database, Installed, Effects, New, and load it on the vocal insert.
  5. On a Mac, rescan once per mode you run FL Studio in (Apple Silicon or Rosetta 2).

Three free options, in no order:

  • Techivation T-De-Esser 2. Free, VST3 among its formats, on macOS and Windows. You pick one of four frequency range modes, set sensitivity with Processing, then Intensity (its ratio) and Sharpness (its knee). Filter lets you hear only the targeted range, and Diff plays the difference. When the range crosses threshold, the maker says the whole signal is compressed.
  • TDR Nova. A free dynamic EQ with four dynamic bands, Windows and macOS, VST3 since version 2.1.0 (current 2.2.2). Tokyo Dawn names sibilance as one of its uses; set one high band with a threshold.
  • Ghostnote VEIL (ours). Free, VST3 on macOS and Windows plus AU on macOS, no licence key. Split-band, so gain reduction lands only above its crossover. Details in the section below.

Where the de-esser goes in an FL Studio mixer insert

Each insert has 10 effect slots, processed from top to bottom. After the slots, the audio passes through the track's built-in 3-band EQ, then the fader, then the sends. A typical vocal insert:

  1. Slot 1: Fruity Parametric EQ 2, cuts only.
  2. Slot 2: the de-esser (Maximus, Fruity Multiband Compressor, or a plugin).
  3. Slots 3 and 4: compression.
  4. Slot 5: a light second de-esser on bright takes, so saturation does not sharpen the esses again. Slot 6: saturation.
  5. Reverb and delay on a separate insert, fed by a send.

The reasons behind that order are in the rap vocal chain in order. To move a plugin, hover over its slot and scroll the mouse wheel. Sends leave after the fader, so a reverb send hears the de-essed vocal; for a pre-fader feed, the manual points to Fruity Send.

Common mistakes in FL Studio

  • Look-ahead with no delay compensation. Maximus's LMH DEL plus its MASTER ATT, and Fruity Limiter's limiter ATT, delay the audio. On a vocal insert, turn on Mixer menu, Plugin delay compensation, Automatic, or set those controls to zero. To see the delay a slot adds, hover over it and read the hint panel.
  • Gaps between Multiband Compressor bands. Frequencies between two cutoffs that do not meet are silent, not uncompressed.
  • A sidechain you can hear. If the Key track still goes to the Master, you hear a thin ess track on top of the vocal.
  • Brightening after the de-esser. A high-band boost on the track's built-in EQ comes after every slot, so it puts back the esses you just removed. Make tonal boosts in a slot, and add a light second de-esser after them if the esses return.

From Our Own Line

Ours is VEIL, and it is free. It is a split-band de-esser: gain reduction lands only on the band above a crossover you set from 3 to 10 kHz (5.5 kHz default). Detection follows the voice's own recent balance, not a fixed level. It has 3 ms of lookahead, reported to the host for delay compensation. Four controls: SENSE, CROSSOVER, RANGE (1 to 24 dB) and RELEASE (20 to 200 ms). LISTEN switches between Output, Sibilants and Removed. Removed plays only what VEIL took, which should be esses, not words.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FL Studio have a built-in de-esser?

Not as a separate plugin. Maximus, included in Producer Edition and up, does de-essing and ships a preset called De-esser Split Band. In every edition, Fruity Multiband Compressor on its high band, or Fruity Limiter with a filtered sidechain, does the same job.

Which de-esser preset comes with FL Studio?

Maximus ships several de-esser presets; the manual's tutorial uses De-esser Split Band. It compresses only the MID band, which reaches up to 20 kHz. Set the MID band's lower edge at your sibilance frequency, then raise PRE and lower POST by the same amount until only the esses get compressed.

Can I de-ess in FL Studio Fruity Edition?

Yes. Maximus is Producer Edition and up, but Fruity Multiband Compressor and Fruity Limiter are in all editions. Use Fruity Multiband Compressor with only the high band active, a sidechained Fruity Limiter, or a free VST3 de-esser loaded after a verified plugin scan.

How do I add a free de-esser VST to FL Studio?

Install it to the default VST3 folder with its installer, then open Options, Manage plugins, tick Verify plugins and run the scan (Find more plugins). It appears in the Browser under Plugin database, Installed, Effects, New.

Which mixer slot should the de-esser go in?

Right after your subtractive EQ and before the first compressor, usually slot 2. The track's built-in EQ comes after all ten slots, so avoid boosting highs there after de-essing.
