Which plugins does every producer need?
Six plugins, one per job: EQ, compressor, reverb, saturation, meter and one instrument. A plugin runs inside your DAW and either makes sound or changes it (full explainer: what are plugins in music). The free column below is not a consolation column: several of those plugins are on sessions I get paid for.

Notice what is missing: no limiter, no de-esser, no tuner, no mastering suite. Specialist tools earn a slot when a problem shows up twice in your own songs.
Should you start with your DAW's stock plugins?
Yes, and for longer than you want to. Stock plugins are not the weak link anymore. A current DAW's EQ and compressor will not be the reason a mix sounds unfinished. Learn the parametric EQ first, then the compressor, then the reverb, then the meter.

- Logic Pro: Channel EQ, Compressor, ChromaVerb, Loudness Meter, all in the Logic Pro User Guide. Switching the Compressor's circuit model teaches compressor character for free: same threshold, same ratio, a different attack behavior in each.

Which EQ should a beginner learn first?
Whichever one your DAW ships, because you will use EQ more than every other plugin combined, and mostly to take things away: low rumble under a vocal, a boxy ring around 300 Hz from an untreated bedroom, one resonance in a sampled loop that stabs you every four bars.
The exercise that teaches most: put a narrow bell at +6 dB, Q around 4, and sweep slowly from 150 Hz to 1 kHz until something jumps out and sounds wrong. Turn that boost into a cut of 2 to 4 dB at the same spot.
Free pick: the Tokyo Dawn Labs catalog. SlickEQ for broad tone moves, TDR Nova when you want a band that only ducks while the problem is there.
Paid pick, later: FabFilter's Pro-Q. You are buying speed and a display, not a different category of sound.
What to listen for: whether the cut made the part clearer or only thinner. Clearer means you found the problem, so keep it. Thinner means the cut was too wide, so raise the Q and go again.
Which compressor should a beginner get?
The stock one, until you can describe what it lacks. A compressor turns down whatever crosses a threshold so the quiet parts can come up afterward, and four controls do the work: threshold, ratio, attack, release. At 3 dB of gain reduction, well-built compressors differ less than their marketing does.
A starting point for a rapped or sung vocal: ratio 3:1, attack 5 ms, release 100 ms, threshold set for 3 to 4 dB of gain reduction on the loudest phrase, then make up the lost level. Move one control at a time.
Free pick: Klanghelm MJUC jr is a variable-mu style compressor with a small control set, which forces you to use your ears. TDR Kotelnikov is a clean leveler for buses.
Paid pick, later: the full Klanghelm MJUC, or FabFilter's Pro-C for precise timing and a gain-reduction display you can read.
What to listen for: consonants. A 1 ms attack at 8:1 flattens the front of every word, which sounds controlled when soloed and lifeless in the track. Slow the attack until the T and K sounds return, then get your level control from release instead. Rap vocals want two compressors in series rather than one working hard: numbers in the rap vocal chain in order.
Which reverb should a beginner start with?
One reverb on a send, shared by several tracks. That is how records are built, and it costs less CPU. Three settings matter more than the plugin. Predelay of 20 to 40 ms so the words arrive before the tail. Decay between 0.8 and 1.6 s for a modern vocal. Then filters on the send: high-cut around 7 kHz so the tail is not built out of esses, high-pass around 300 Hz so it stops crowding the low mids where the 808 lives.
Free pick: Valhalla Supermassive, a delay and reverb hybrid that covers everything from a short slap to a tail you can get lost in.
Paid pick, later: a dedicated room or plate. Supermassive goes long and modulated; a short plate is what sits under most rap vocals.
What to listen for: whether you notice the tail while the vocal is talking. If you do, it is too loud or too long. Push it until it is obvious, then pull it down until it disappears under the words and reappears in the gaps.
Do you need a saturation plugin?
Not on day one, but it is the category that changes home mixes the most. Saturation adds harmonics that were not in the source, so a part reads bigger without rising on a peak meter. It is how an 808 stays audible on a phone speaker that barely moves below a few hundred hertz.
It also raises perceived level, which is why it fools beginners. Louder usually wins a comparison that is not level-matched, a bias Ian Shepherd has written about for years. Match your bypass level before you decide the plugin improved anything.

What to listen for: the body getting denser before the top end turns brittle. On headphones, drive a hi-hat loop hard and listen above the part for a gritty halo. That is aliasing, and holding it down is what oversampling buys you.
Which meters should you install before anything else?
A spectrum analyzer and a loudness meter, both free. Cheapest upgrade you can make, because they turn guessing into reading.
Four numbers are worth knowing, all defined in ITU-R BS.1770 and the EBU R128 practice built on it:
- Momentary loudness over a 400 ms window. Useful for spotting one shouted ad-lib.
- Short-term loudness over 3 s. Your section-to-section balance, hook against verse.
- Integrated loudness over the whole program, gated so silence does not drag it down. This is the number streaming services read.
- True peak, measured with oversampling so inter-sample peaks show up before an encoder finds them.
Why it matters: Spotify's own documentation explains that playback is normalized toward roughly −14 LUFS, with a −1 dBTP ceiling recommended on masters louder than that. Turning your render up does not make it louder for a listener; it only costs you dynamic range. Genre targets are in how loud a rap master should be.
Free picks: Voxengo SPAN for spectrum, Youlean Loudness Meter in its free version for LUFS and true peak. Meters are for checking, not deciding: set the balance by ear, then look.
Paid pick, later: none. A free meter reads the same integrated LUFS and true peak the standards define.
Which synth should a beginner learn?
One, learned properly. Browsing presets in twelve synths teaches less than driving one synth from an initialized patch, because the same four controls repeat across every instrument you will ever open: oscillator, filter, envelope, LFO.
Free picks: Vital is a wavetable synth with a capable free tier, and Surge XT is open source and deep enough to last years. For played instruments instead of synthesis, Spitfire LABS gives away sampled strings, pianos and textures; the catch is an account signup.
Paid pick, later: Xfer's Serum, the wavetable synth most tutorials assume you own.
What to listen for: whether you can start from init and reach the sound you imagined. If you cannot, more plugins will not help. That is a filter-and-envelope skill.
What do beginners overspend on?
The first plugin I paid for was a mastering bundle. It sat unused for a year while my mixes stayed muddy, because my problem was a buildup around 250 Hz on every layered vocal, and no mastering suite was going to name that for me.
- Bundle sales. Dozens of plugins for the price of two feels like a win until you count the ones you reopen.
- Sample library sprawl. Terabytes of loops and one unfinished project. Sounds do not arrange themselves.
- Mastering suites before mix skills. Mastering polishes a good mix. It cannot rebalance a vocal sitting 4 dB too quiet in the second verse.
- Plugins instead of the room. Monitors you know, or headphones you have heard a hundred released songs on, change more decisions than any plugin purchase.

How do you learn a new plugin properly?
Give it a month and use it on everything. Five habits make the month count.
- Level-match every A/B. Trim the processed path until bypassed and engaged sound equally loud, then judge. Skip it and you will keep picking the louder option.
- Go to the extremes first. Push each control past sensible to learn what it governs, then back off. Ratio at 20:1 teaches more in one pass than 2:1 does in ten.
- Start from init, not presets. A preset was built for a different voice in a different room. Read it as someone else's control positions, then move threshold and frequency yourself.
- Read the manual once. Developer manuals are short and answer the question you were about to guess.
- Monitor at a consistent level, an argument Bob Katz has made for decades. Perceived bass and treble balance shifts with volume, so a moving reference means moving decisions.

Gain reduction lands on the high band of an LR4 crossover only (3 to 10 kHz, default 5.5 kHz), so the body of a voice cannot be touched by construction. Its detector reads the high-frequency envelope against the full-band envelope in dB, so it is level-independent: in our probes, an "ss" at −9 dBFS and the same "ss" at −29 dBFS both received exactly 10.0 dB of gain reduction, and 300 Hz body content measured −0.00 dB while 4.6 dB of de-essing was active.
Two limits. It is a dedicated de-esser, not a broadband resonance suppressor, so it will not fix a harsh top end on its own. What is the first plugin a beginner should buy?
Buy nothing yet. Install a free spectrum analyzer and a free loudness meter, then work with stock plugins until you can name what your stock EQ or compressor will not do. That missing thing is your shopping list, usually an EQ with dynamic bands.
Do expensive plugins make your mixes sound better?
Not on their own. Paid plugins mostly buy workflow: clearer displays, faster recall, oversampling, fewer instances to finish the job, and none of that will find the 250 Hz buildup for you. A cheap chain used by someone who level-matches every comparison beats an expensive chain used blind.
